Approach
With an unwavering commitment to purposeful work, RED collaborates closely with project teams from concept through construction administration, ensuring that sustainability is not merely an aspiration, but a measurable and meaningful outcome at every stage. Through deep expertise in regenerative systems, ecological restoration, and performance-based strategies, RED supports project teams in all aspects of sustainable landscape design—while also fostering ecological literacy to build shared understanding, strengthen decision-making, and cultivate long-term stewardship.

Global Concerns.  Regional Context.
Cities around the world face similar vulnerabilities and share urgent concerns related to climate change, habitat loss, and the growing need for resilience.  RED approaches these global challenges through a grounded, local perspective. Each project draws on the latest science, regional data, and community knowledge to address environmental and social needs unique to its context. Through close collaboration with project teams, design solutions are tailored to reflect site-specific programs and priorities.  This place-based approach ensures projects are not only successful but also adaptable, equitable, and enduring.

Defining Sustainability
Sustainability is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Its meaning and priorities shift with local context, program requirements, and project vision. With project leaders, RED works to clarify sustainability priorities, developing site-specific goals and performance benchmarks that translate broad aspirations into actionable, measurable outcomes.  Clear targets—such as decarbonization, improved air and water quality, increased biodiversity, water conservation, and equitable access to green space—are determined to create a practical framework that guides decision-making and defines success.

Performance based design
RED employs a collaborative and integrated process to provide strategic guidance that actively engages and invests all team members in sustainability. We conduct in-depth research and analysis to set meaningful goals and establish clear performance benchmarks. Our approach ensures that key sustainability decisions and criteria are identified for each project phase, and tailored design and construction solutions provide the desired environmental and social benefits. With transparent reporting and regular benchmarking at critical milestones, projects stay on track, allowing for informed adjustments that align with measurable outcomes and the overall project vision.

Resilience and Regeneration
In every project, RED advances sustainability by embedding both resilience and regeneration into the design process.  Rather than simply minimizing harm, this approach actively seeks to restore natural systems, build ecosystem services and enhance community well-being. In close collaboration with project teams, RED assesses potential disruptions—such as climate impacts, ecological stressors, and infrastructure vulnerabilities—to identify risks early and build adaptive capacity.  The emphasis is on nature-based solutions that are simple, passive, and long-lasting. These design strategies work with natural processes rather than against them, creating systems that respond to change, recover from stress, and thrive over time. By aligning ecological performance with community values, RED’s regenerative approach delivers net positive outcomes—revitalizing ecosystems, enriching habitat, and strengthening social capital.

Stewardship and Adaptive Management
Sustainable design requires more than thoughtful planning and innovative solutions—it demands long-term care and informed management. Recognizing this, RED engages project teams early in operational and maintenance discussions to ensure that long-term stewardship is considered as an integral part of the design process.
Through close collaboration with clients and landscape management personnel, RED supports the development of adaptive landscape management strategies tailored to evolving site needs and resource constraints. These strategies are rooted in continuous learning, on-the-ground monitoring, and flexible decision-making that allows for timely adjustments as conditions change and landscapes mature.
This proactive, systems-based approach helps landscapes not only endure but evolve—ensuring they remain resilient, functional, and vibrant for years to come, while upholding both ecological integrity and long-term value.

Transparency and Third-Party Verification
If engaged early in the project, RED can lead the documentation and certification process for SITES—Sustainable Sites Initiative—and other landscape-focused sustainability programs, as requested by the client. By coordinating technical requirements, design strategies, and performance goals across disciplines, RED streamlines the path to certification. Achieving third-party verification  demonstrates a project’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and long-term site performance—providing globally recognized validation of environmental leadership and design excellence.
