The Ditch Water Discovery Center
The Ditch Water Discovery Center—“the Ditch”—in Stephenville, Texas, is redefining land and water stewardship through innovative design and community engagement. As the first groundwater conservation district in Texas with a dedicated education facility, the Ditch empowers the public to understand and value groundwater resources with hands-on experiences and sustainable landscape strategies.

Situated in a rapidly developing area, the 2.75-acre site transforms a neglected space into a resilient prairie and riparian landscape. The design features a 100% native plant palette and green infrastructure—rain gardens, bioswales, and rainwater harvesting—to manage the 95th percentile storm event, sustain vegetation, support wildlife habitat, and reduce potable water use by 97%. All soil and vegetation are reused on site, reflecting a deep commitment to resource conservation.

The pavilion operates entirely on renewable energy produced onsite. Solar panels, along with large overhangs, operable wall panels, abundant daylighting, and cross-ventilation, deliver net-zero energy performance and eliminate the need for conventional HVAC systems. Designed for flexibility and eventual deconstruction, the pavilion serves as both a teaching tool and a functional gathering space, demonstrating lifecycle thinking and adaptability.
Local and sustainable sourcing is prioritized throughout, with 44% of construction materials salvaged, 54% containing recycled content, and 77% sourced from local manufacturers. Nearly 40% support transparency and safer chemistry, and a significant portion comes from manufacturers with verified sustainable practices.

Interpretive features—including a reclaimed 1900s steel truss bridge, a rammed earth wall illustrating the Trinity Aquifer, steel pillars highlighting native root systems, and a groundwater mural—connect visitors to the natural and hydrological systems beneath their feet. The center provides interactive exhibits, shaded seating, restrooms, and Wi-Fi-enabled outdoor areas to welcome both students and the broader community.

Through its integrative design and accessible education, the Ditch Water Discovery Center inspires environmental stewardship and demonstrates how regenerative landscapes can help secure a sustainable water future for Texas
